2026/10/23 Weekly Summary Letter

Hey NUMBERS community,
A completed search can still leave a reviewer with work to do. This week, Numbers Protocol focused on making Verify Engine results easier to interpret: which registered asset was found, whether a candidate is only visually similar, and what the search could not establish. That clarity matters when another team has to decide what to inspect next.
Asset Search separates exact results from similar candidates. An exact result identifies the registered asset. A similar result can help investigate a modified copy, but it does not establish that the two files are identical. Similarity distance helps narrow that investigation; a lower distance means a closer visual comparison, not a higher percentage of certainty.
Builders should carry those distinctions into the interface around the API. A successful request means a response arrived. It does not make every response a positive verification. No suitable result, unsupported search, and request failure need different explanations, so a timeout never quietly becomes a claim that no source exists. The reviewer should be able to see the evidence and the limits of the check.
The same care starts before the lookup. A useful handoff connects the delivered file, its source reference, access to the original, and context about intentional changes. The producer and recipient each hold part of that picture. Keeping those pieces together makes provenance easier for the next person to use.
This week also brought a NUM announcement: the Q3 and Q4 burns are planned together in Q4, with a minimum of 12,000,000 NUM. The quarterly minimum is 6,000,000 NUM, so the combined plan covers both quarters. The announcement describes a future burn; completion remains a separate event.
Thank you for continuing to test, share, and ask precise questions with us. Human truth. Machine proof. grows more useful when the record helps someone make the next decision.
Have a restful weekend. Our team will respond a little more slowly while taking some time to recharge, and our moderators will keep supporting you.
Onward,
Steffen
